In 1986, Maloy's Jewelry Workshop opened its doors in Portland to offer high quality antique and estate jewelry from the Georgian period (18th century) onwards. We wanted to offer distinctive pieces that would be passed down from generation to generation.
Maloy's offers expert repair and restoration
Shan Maloy began making jewelry in high school and found that he was better than the teacher. His passion was ignited. From Hawaii to Australia, Shan worked in “sweatshops” and mall jewelry stores learning the fundamentals of his craft. It was in Australia that he was introduced to old world techniques. Shan took the chance and opened his own workshop with a tray of jewelry he had designed, a little bit of cash and a steady lineup of trade work over the coming months.
Having limited funds, he could only afford to repaint the name on the building. Luckily, the space had housed a jewelry store, and while sales grew, Shan started buying and selling estate jewelry, which helped keep the place going in the early years.
As an artist, Shan was deeply influenced by the beauty and technique he found in the antique pieces. It helped develop his aesthetic and he is today dedicated to preserving and furthering fine construction techniques.
With his reputation for technical mastery and straightforward, no nonsense approach, Maloys became one of Portland's best kept secrets.
But as the Maloy's story was spread by its customers, the workshop staff grew to feature nine craftspeople and designers. Each passionate about jewelry and passionate about doing it in the upfront, kind and respectful way Shan believed in nearly 21 years ago.
